Updated July 2026 · Château d'Amboise Tickets Concierge Team

The Château Royal d'Amboise sits directly above Amboise town, which makes the final approach simple regardless of how you arrive in the Loire Valley — but the region's train network means the smart routing depends on your starting point. Tours is the regional hub with the closest TGV connections; Paris visitors usually route through Tours or Saint-Pierre-des-Corps station; and once you're in Amboise itself, the château is a walkable, well-signposted climb from both the town centre and the train station. This guide covers each route in turn.

From Tours: the short regional hop

Amboise is about 25 km east of Tours, and it's an easy trip by regional train (TER), typically taking around 20 minutes from Tours' main station to Amboise station. Trains run regularly through the day, making Amboise a realistic half-day or full-day trip from a Tours base without needing a car. Driving covers the same distance in roughly 25–35 minutes depending on traffic, with paid parking available in the town below the château.

Tours itself is well connected by TGV to Paris, Bordeaux and other major French cities, which is why many Loire Valley visitors base themselves there rather than in Amboise directly, using the short regional hop out to the château and back.

From Paris: TGV plus a short regional connection

The most efficient route from Paris is by TGV from Gare Montparnasse to Tours or to Saint-Pierre-des-Corps station (just outside Tours), a journey of a little over an hour, followed by a short TER regional train to Amboise of around 20 minutes. Total door-to-door time is typically in the range of 1.5–2 hours, making Amboise a genuine day-trip option from Paris for visitors with a flexible schedule, though an overnight stay in the Loire Valley lets you see more without the return-train pressure.

A small number of direct Intercités trains also call at Amboise from Paris without requiring a change, though schedules and frequency vary by season — worth checking against your travel dates if a single-train journey matters to you. Driving from Paris takes around 2.5 hours via the A10 motorway, a straightforward route with no complicated navigation once you leave the city.

Arriving in Amboise: the walk up to the château

However you arrive, the château itself is unmistakable — it dominates the hilltop above the town and is visible from most of central Amboise. From Amboise train station, on the north bank of the Loire, it's a walk of around 15–20 minutes across the river bridge and up into the town to reach the château entrance; some visitors prefer the option of a local shuttle bus between the station and town centre if available on the day. From the town centre itself, the walk up to the ticket entrance is short, following the Montée de l'Émir Abd el-Kader, a sloping walkway that climbs from Place Michel Debré directly to the château gates.

Drivers should note there is no dedicated visitor car park immediately at the château; paid public parking is available in the streets and car parks of the town below, a short walk from the entrance. Amboise is also a stop on the Loire à Vélo cycling route, and cyclists following the river regularly build the château into a Loire Valley itinerary by bike.
